What hair routine do you have? Do you use shampoo and conditioner? How often do you wash your hair? It’s not uncommon to do both every time you wash your hair, but do you know if you’re conditioning your hair correctly?

When it comes to hair routines, conditioner should play an important part in that process. In fact, your hair doesn’t have to be damaged or dry to benefit from conditioning. Shampoo works to clean your hair by removing dirt and hair oil. But conditioner is what helps put moisture back into your hair. Depending on the conditioner, they can make your hair softer, easier to brush, and restore shine and balance.

In this post, we provide a guide to conditioning your hair. Read more to learn about different things you can be doing to get the most out of your conditioner.

Benefits of Using Conditioner

We already explained the ways that conditioner helps add moisture and shine back into your hair after the shampoo removes all of the dirt and oil that has accumulated in your hair.

Conditioner often get a bad reputation for leaving your hair weighed down, greasy, or dull. But that only happens if you’re using conditioner incorrectly.

Like with shampoo, you shouldn’t be conditioning your hair every day. You body produces natural oils to help keep your hair hydrated. When you shampoo, those oils are stripped from your hair and replaced with conditioner. While this varies for everyone based on their hair, washing and conditioning your hair two to three times a week is enough to keep your hair healthy and happy. Otherwise, you’re stripping your hair of all those oils every day, which can actually make your hair worse.

As you can tell, when it comes to conditioner, there are a lot of factors you need to consider.

Choosing the Right Conditioner

How long is your hair? How thick or thin? Is your hair curly? Is your hair dry or damaged? Do you have dye in your hair? All of these different things affect the type of conditioner you should apply to your hair.

Before buying any type of conditioner, evaluate what you’re looking for with that conditioner:

  • Hydration and nourishment
  • More volume
  • Smooth and detangled hair
  • Less frizz

Doing this step first will help point you in the right direction.

Hair Texture

This is probably the first thing you should consider — especially if you want to avoid the weighed down feeling that incorrect conditioner can cause. Look at the size and shape of your hair. For example, fine hair is when the diameter of your hair is very small. It’s important to understand that this does not refer to the actual amount of hairs you have on your head. On the other hand, coarse hair is rough and feels thicker in texture.

You want to make sure that you pick a conditioner that works best for your hair. If your hair is already coarse, you don’t want a conditioner that will cause your hair to poof any more.

Color-Treated Hair

Is your hair dyed or highlighted? This is another factor to consider before buying a conditioner. Since you’ve put a chemical on your hair, you want to use a conditioner designed to help your hair repair. In fact, there are specific conditioners made specifically for color-treated hair, ensuring that you maintain your color while helping your hair heal.

Dry or Damaged Hair

Since conditioner puts moisture back in your hair, it’s a great way to hydrate or mend damaged and dry hair. If you want to maintain that hydration, you need to continue using conditioner regularly. There are also other options, like a deep-conditioning treatment, to help give your hair some deep hydration. Leave-in conditioners are also great if you’re looking for an intense conditioner.

Note: Extremely damaged hair is challenging to fix with conditioner. Depending on how damaged your hair is, a lot of hair can’t come back from that damage — even with conditioner or a deep-condition treatment. If you’re worried about damaged hair, make an appointment at nearby salon to have a stylist help you trim off the damaged hair and make sure the rest of your hair is healthy.

How to Best Use Conditioner

As a general rule, the bottle will give you instructions specific to each product. If you’ve chosen a conditioner unique to your hair, those instructions should help you avoid using the conditioner incorrectly.

But at Moxie, we’ve listed some tips for conditioning your hair so you can get the best results from your conditioner:

  • To make conditioning easier, detangle your hair before you start.
  • Wring your hair out before applying conditioner. This allows the conditioner to coat your hair fibres instead of dripping off in the water.
  • Use the right amount of conditioner for the length of your hair. The longer your hair, the more conditioner you should use to make sure you get all of your hair properly conditioned.
  • Focus on the oldest parts of your hair — the ends. This is where your hair is most damaged and needs conditioner the most. In fact, conditioning your roots and scalp every time you wash your hair can lead to over-conditioning and cause your scalp to dry out.
  • Use a wide-toothed comb to help distribute the conditioner throughout your hair evenly and thoroughly.
  • After you’ve allowed the conditioner to absorb, rinse out the conditioner until your hair feels clean and free of conditioner. Unless it’s a leave-in conditioner, you don’t want to leave any conditioner in your hair.
